THREE GRANDPAS AND A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE (2025)

The film opens with Grace Hanson (Jane Fonda) trying — aggressively — to host her first “perfect” Christmas since her wedding to Nick ended and she returned to her beach house. Determined to prove she can still do everything her own way, Grace schedules an immaculate holiday dinner, complete with gold-plated place cards and a signature cocktail she calls “The Merry Divorce.” Meanwhile, Frankie Bergstein (Lily Tomlin) is planning her own Christmas celebration… at the exact same time. Her party involves paint-splattered  ornaments, a meditation drum circle, and a “gift of the universe exchange” that terrifies everyone who’s ever met her. When the women realize they’ve double-booked the beach house, the battle begins — glitter vs. gold, chaos vs. control, Frankie vs. Grace.

Their children add to the mayhem. Mallory is panicking over an empty nest Christmas, Brianna is pretending not to care but absolutely does, Coyote is bringing his new girlfriend (who happens to be a nun), and Bud is trying to keep the peace with awkward peppermint-themed therapy exercises. Sol and Robert, now fully retired and wildly overinvested in community theater, arrive dressed as “interpretive angels,” ready to perform an unsolicited Christmas musical number. The tangled, hilarious energy of the families colliding again becomes the movie’s comedic engine, a nostalgic return to everything fans loved about the series.

Jane Fonda And Lily Tomlin 'Moving On' To New Movie Together

The heart of the film emerges when both women realize the real reason they’re fighting: they’re afraid of losing each other. Grace is struggling with the loneliness that comes with aging — afraid that Christmas will underline everything she’s lost. Frankie is frightened by her worsening arthritis and a new health scare she’s been hiding, terrified the holiday may be her last big celebration. Their grief and fear, tucked beneath jokes and margaritas, finally come spilling out in a raw, beautiful confrontation illuminated by the Christmas tree lights. Grace admits she doesn’t want to face another holiday without Frankie. Frankie confesses she’s scared of a future where she can’t live life the way she wants. They make a promise: Whatever comes next, they’ll face it together.

After a surprise blackout hits the beach house during a storm, both families band together to create a makeshift Christmas festival on the beach—complete with driftwood  decorations, a bonfire, Sol and Robert’s chaotic angel performance, and Frankie’s drum circle merging awkwardly with Grace’s elegant cocktail hour. The storm becomes an unexpected blessing, breaking down the walls between the families and their expectations. Grace and Frankie, wrapped in blankets and sipping hot toddies, sit side by side watching their loved ones laugh under the glow of lanterns and moonlight.

The film’s emotional climax arrives when Frankie reveals her health scare to the whole family. Instead of sadness, the moment becomes a declaration of love — everyone promising to support her, to fight with her, and to make every holiday count. Grace takes Frankie’s hand and says softly, “You’re my Christmas miracle, whether you like it or not.” Frankie responds, “I like it. But don’t get mushy. I’m still me.”

The final scene shows the two women sneaking out of the house before sunrise on Christmas morning, wearing matching Santa hats and driving a golf cart to the beach. They exchange handmade gifts — Grace gives Frankie a beautifully bound sketchbook, Frankie gives Grace a personalized flask engraved with “Still Here, Still Weird, Still Us.” As they watch the sun rise over the ocean, Grace says, “You know, this might be my favorite Christmas ever.” Frankie smiles: “Mine too. And we’re just getting started.”

Grace and Frankie: A Very Merry Christmas (2025) is funny, heartfelt, and quietly profound — a celebration of friendship that outshines romance, family that grows in unexpected shapes, and the magic of finding joy at any age. It’s the perfect send-off for two of television’s most iconic women, wrapped in twinkle lights, laughter, and love.
